#9859 [Migration] to Transfer NopCommerce to Magento

Posted by James on 05 August 2016 - 08:12 AM in Migration to Magento

The great thing about open source ecommerce platforms is that their core functions are often free, and they are highly customizable. Web designers and coders can get into the program, tinker with it, and even alter the source code to improve the program. Two of the most popular open source ecommerce platforms, Magento and nopCommerce, are both excellent programs.

Magento is a sprawling, powerful ecommerce platform that pretty much has it all. It is a software solution that specifically has developers and designers in mind. Site designs are highly customizable and there is virtually no limit to what you can do with it, so long as you have intermediate to advanced understanding of HTML/CSS/PHP.

nopCommerce is easy to set up and easier to customize than Magento. The software is still buggy, and you have to do your own hosting. Plus, there is not a whole lot of support available outside the community forums, so you’re pretty much on your own figuring out the program. Also, you have to use Microsoft licenses. Given the Magento vs nopCommerce debate, nopCommerce is easier to use but is less polished and comprehensive as an ecommerce solution.

When it comes to the Magento vs nopCommerce debate, I definitely prefer Magento when I go to build a web site. As a web designer who has built countless online stores with many different ecommerce platforms, I’ve found that Magento is one of the best ecommerce platforms you can use, hands down. nopCommerce is a great program, but Magento just has so many more features and customization options, plus you can opt for a more refined version with customer support if you pay for the Enterprise Edition.

If you want to transfer nopCommerce to Magento now, you can use nopCommerce to Magento migration. This tool is highly appreciated by web dev experts to migrate products, customers, orders, categories and even SEO URLs from existing nopCommerce to Magento shopping cart.

As I know, Magento 1.9 is the last upgrade version of Magento 1.x. Although many new change in structure, Magento 1.9 interface is friendly with users of Magento 1.x, from 1.5 to 1.8.

If you want to upgrade magento from 1.6 to 1.9, developer can follow some steps:
  • Created new instance for the same.

  • Same when i hit the url its infinite loop.

However, in some case, it is not successful. When you clear the cache and hit the url its infinite redirect loop. Upgrading through the browser has a number of downsides, most notably that the browser can timeout or anything from the webserver you're talking to and the php backend. When that happens you have no clue what went wrong or is going to go wrong.

#12214 New way to upgrade magento 1.9 to 2

Posted by James on 02 November 2016 - 04:25 AM in Migration to Magento

Magento 2.0 is much more efficient than the previous version. The standard version supports Varnish and FullPage Cache (FPC) – the latter so far only available in the Enterprise version. In terms of scalability it’s also worth mentioning the use of database replication in a multi-master mode, which means that you can delegate dedicated database servers to handle only a given directory or only orders. It’s a great option when large-scale solutions, not available previously. Magento has moved with the times and the technological gap with respect to the previous version causes difficulties in migration.

Moving from Magento 1.x to 2.x is a migration process. You have some choices to upgrade Magento 1.9 to 2 :

1. Upgrade it manually. It may take a lot of time and get a lot of bugs but cheap.
The database schema changes so much that the process is referred to as Migration. The data has to be exported, translated to the new database tables/columns or discarded as applicable. The directory structure and internal operations of Magento have changed so much that you will need to check with your developers to get modules rewritten to work with Magento 2.0. Same goes for themes and templates.

2. Hire an expert to do upgrade magento it for you. It seems to be so expensive, especially you have a lot of database.

3. Use a Magento upgrade extension. It is a popular way. I suggest this automated shopping cart migration tool. It is cheap but effective

It is worth mentioning that Magento 2 officially supports latest PHP versions (starting from PHP 5.5.x), including PHP 7. Those versions already include new security fixes and improvements that directly affect web store’s speed. In one of our articles we’ve already described the benefits of running Magento with PHP 7. And for sure, we strongly recommend using PHP 7 when building Magento 2 stores. Let's use Magento upgrade guide to upgrade all existing data from magento 1 to 2 automatically.

#11598 OpenCart is really better than Zen Cart?

Posted by James on 23 September 2016 - 08:59 AM in OpenCart general discussions

OpenCart and Zen Cart are two popular online shopping carts that include a large number of market share in the e-commerce. Zen Cart is one of the oldest carts. Programmers choose Zen Cart for its PHP/MySQL based foundation with hundreds of well-developed plugins. Zen Cart supports non-programmers to adjust some settings in the code if needed. Beside Zen Cart, OpenCart is quite easy to set up and control. OpenCart provides the ability to edit CSS, change the layout quickly. It provides hundreds of professional templates and vast number of plugins.

In below, objective comparison will shows some significant differences exist in many aspects of features, server requirement, design, shipping and technical support between Zen Cart and OpenCart.

Server Requirements

With OpenCart, developers create a web server to make the OpenCart store publically available on the web and select a hosting service. It requires hosted/online operating system.

ZenCart has minimum server requirements for running on the platform (Curl, PHP4.3, Apache 1.3.38 and MySQL 3.2.x). The application program requires Windows operating system to fully function.

Design Features

OpenCart is designed with rich features including digital goods, daily backup, multi-store support, bulk image upload, PCI compliance, site template andunlimited categories, products and manufactures marking a turn-key ready out of the box shopping cart solution. Generally speaking, it provides all necessary features to run a basic store and allows customization according to personal needs and requirements of merchants. Open Cart support 18 optional languages.

ZenCart, however, features simplified installation andincreased flexibility which enables people easily handle a great number of product features containing dedicated IP address, breadcrumb navigation, drag and drop design, WYSIWYG editor and optimized URLs. Only English is the supported language version.

Technical Support

OpenCart users are allowed to look for a help via videos, emails, blogs, user manual, phone, request form, knowledge base and online self-server. OpenCart has strong user community that is available to seek help. On the other hand, Zen Cart provides acitve free techincal support 24/7 on forum. They don;t answer individual support questions via email or telephone.

Each platform has different advantages and disadvantage. The comparison wish to help you have clear understanding about two platform and make a right choice for online business. Some developers prefer OpenCart than Zen Cart because of suitable features. If you agree, you can transfer Zen Cart to OpenCart and enjoy new choice.

#11597 Shopify or Magento for online business in 2016

Posted by James on 23 September 2016 - 08:52 AM in Magento general discussions

Both Magento and Shopify are leading e-commerce website in current years. Each of them is used for different business targets. However, as many experts pointed out, Magento wins in some aspects, which can help online owners and developers to make the right choice.

MagentovsShopify-578x269.jpg

*Cost:

Setup fees

Although charging no fees for setup, Shopify indeed supports a 14-day free trial for web developers and store owners to test the functionalities and features. Meanwhile, Magento is totally free to install and use.

Monthly fees

Shopify offers four different plans with monthly fees ranging from $14 to $179 as follows:

• Starter Plan : $ 14

• Basic Plan : $ 29

• Professional Plan : $79

• Unlimited Plan : $179

With Magento, you’ll have to provide your own hosting, which is available at monthly costs ranging anywhere from $5 to 100s of dollars.

*Product features

Because Magento started out as an open-source web application, it’s more flexible when it comes to customization. There are three things Magento is better at than Shopify: offering your store in multiple languages, providing discount codes and integrating with Ebay. With the more expensive Magento plans, you get the ability to offer your store to users in a several different languages; Shopify does not, at time of writing, currently permit this ‘out of the box’. As for discount codes, both Shopify and Magento offer them, but in the case of Shopify, only on the more expensive plans (Magento offers them as standard). Finally, Magento integrates extremely well with Ebay– you can manage both your Ebay store and your Magento Go store using one control panel.

*Marketing:

Magento provides powerful SEO features like SEO friendly URLs, meta info, a Google sitemap and a handy Google Content API for expanding on your SEO customization. Both solutions can integrate with Google Analytics.

Furthermore, Magento supports great deal of built-in promotion options, since you receive features for upselling, promotional pricing, flexible coupons, related products, free shipping, product bundling and more. This feature helps online store owners a lot to push sales quickly with more conversions.

Choose Shopify or Magento depends totally on your demands. However, as you can see the experts' recommendation, Magento may give you more chances to improve your business efficiently. If you are owning a Shopify store and intend to transfer data to Magento, you can consider Shopify to Magento migration extension as a prioritized choice.

On the other hand, you want to use a service shopping cart as Shopify, you can move Magento to Shopify easily with Magento to Shopify migration extension.

Hope it helpful!

#6192 Why should we upgrade Magento?

Posted by James on 07 January 2016 - 09:42 AM in Magento general discussions

Magento has been a very powerful and fast growing e-Commerce since it was launched in 2007 by Varien. Nowadays, Magento is chosen as a major digital commerce platform by over 200,000 online retailers because of its modular architecture, complete scalability and a wide range of options. Howewer, like many other softwares, Magento always upgrade its present version to become more compatible with users. The question is ‘Should we upgrade Magento?’.

We all believe that the appearance of the latter is the innovation of the previous. Therefore in this article, we will show you 7 reasons why the answer is yes.

upgrading-magento2.jpg

1. Security Updates

The first reason why we should definitely upgrade Magento version as soon as possible is the security issues. The world of online security is progressing at light speed day by day. Even famous brands such as Adobe, Sony, Amazon and Wal-Mart were all hacked in 2014. Magento has stepped up its default security in the newest version to protect users’ privacy.

What Magento did to patch security gaps:

  • XSS vulnerability while creating configurable product variations was addressed.
  • Information about different orders was not displayed.
  • Changes to PayPal Express checkout.
  • An .swf file was removed from the Magento distribution.
  • File system was secured better.
  • The security of action URLs was enhanced.
  • Vulnerability during checkout was fixed
  • The randomness function was also more secured
2. Responsive Theme Updates

The default Magento theme in the 1.9 version is mobile-responsive which is the best solution for salesman because the site that they invest in is compatible with any device of customers. This means that a shopping cart was design to work on any screen size. With responsive design, it is much more easy for merchants to boost conversion, for mobile-using customers to place an order or checkout anywhere. Moreover, this brings SEO advantages as well. If merchants focus a bit more on the content, this has big implications for SEO also in order to engage customers and reduce bounce rates.

3. Functionality Bug Fixes

Magento has continously added new functionality and bug fixes which will make your website run more smoothly and efficiently. So why don’t you take these advantages?

Specifically, with platform bugs, Magento 1.9 gave fixes on web store and shopping cart, Promotional Price Rule, Administrative Ordering, Invoicing, Credit Memo, Import, Payment Method and many other fixes.

4. Improved performance

Magento C.E 1.9 appeared with a new fresh responsive look at the first time being introduced. This latest update brings some excellent improvements which improves your store’s performance.

We can see in the lastest build, Magento has a complete new interface; for instance, old themes has been updated and replaced by fresh responsive web design.

5. Support of the latest PHP version

Each Magento CE and EE version supports the PHP versions, specially

  • Magento CE 1.6.0.0–1.8.1.0 and Magento EE 1.11.0.0–1.13.1.0 support PHP 5.3 natively.
  • Magento CE 1.9.0.x and EE 1.14.0.x support PHP 5.4 natively.
  • Magento CE 1.9.1 and EE 1.14.1 support PHP 5.5 natively.

You know, PHP 5.4 and 5.5 have made breaking changes from earlier versions of PHP. Therefore, we recommend you use the most recent PHP version supported by your version of Magento. For example, you should use PHP 5.5 with CE 1.9.1 or EE 1.14.1. This means that your Magento website version 1.9.1 can run smoothly under PHP 5.5.

6. Tax calculation improvements

This improvement means that notwithstanding tax settings, the price is displayed include tax correctly with fixed price and dynamic price bundled products. For instance, default tax rate is different from the origin tax rate. This gives merchants access to accurate and consistent tax calculations and displays.

Resolved issues with calculating the credit memo amount when Fixed Product Tax (FPT) is discounted and the customer purchases more than one item.

7. Integration with Google Analytics

We believe that Google Analytics has become the standard for all websites since being released in April 2004. Magento promptly integrated with Google Analytics to bring customers convenience. If you’ve wanted to harness its power with Magento you’ve had to custom install the code directly into the pages. This process is now much simpler with the latest version of Magento.

To conclude, we want to say that upgrading to the latest version of Magento is a necessity. Magento is constantly adding new functionality and fixes, and these yearly updates are free and relatively easy to take advantage of. If you find it difficult to upgrade your Magento website, don’t worry because we are here to help you. Check out LitExtension tool http://litextension....to-magento.html , (this tool has supported Magento to Magento 2 already) and let us make you migration process simpler.

#6154 Should use Magento Cloud or self-hosted Magento?

Posted by James on 05 January 2016 - 08:02 AM in Magento general discussions

Nowadays, the term "Magento Cloud" is mentioned everywhere specially in ecommerce market. The 'cloud’ is amongst the top ten confusing tech buzzword in the last decade that everyone uses but doesn’t quite understand. What is it?, What is its pros and cons? And is it really suitable for Magento? are questions to many people even yourself. In this article, we desire to show you the answers and help you give the right decision in choosing Magento cloud or self-hosted version. Magento cloud is a fully managed cloud platform for your Magento store which are helping those new to Magento to get set-up quicker with higher cost. These are designed, built and hosted on servers by service companies and users have to pay a monthly fee for their ecommerce data storage, customer list, inventory and sales grow. However, if you have enough technical knowledge, we suggest using self-hosted Magento which allows you to make as many changes on your online Magento  store as you want. Best of all, it is usually free and updated by an awesome community of Magento developers.

If you are wondering to choose between Magento Cloud and self-hosted Magento, let LitExtension leave your worries by below idea:

Pros and cons of Magento Cloud

Advantages

We all agree that the appearance of Magento cloud computing has brought a lot of changes technical world. We want to mention some advantages of it:

·         Easy to Set Up: You can set up an account on cloud Magento with your individual settings within a few minutes. After that you can immediately start using your own Magento Store.

·         More Storage: With Magento Cloud, memory is not limited by the particular device any more. Because Magento cloud provides more storage, you don’t have to worry about exhausting space on your hard drive.

·         Only pay for what you use: Magento Cloud allows you to pay for exactly what applications or services you want, when you use them. You also can add new services to your Magento website whenever  you need changes.

Disadvantages:

However, everything is not too easy like that. Besides these benefits, Magento cloud also contains some drawbacks.

·         Security: This is the issues attracting most attention from users. You can understand that using Magento cloud means that you are handing over your data to a third party providing Magento Cloud Server. What will happen when all users from all over the world are accessing the same server? It is the security issue. That is the reason why companies particularly concern about using Magento cloud. They are worried that their data may be harmed by viruses and malware.

·         High cost:  Going with convenience is higher price. Unlike buying computers and software, Magento cloud is a service you have to purchase. Therefore, you don’t just pay for upfront costs but ongoing operating costs. This means that the expense will become more expensive in the long-term.

·         Loss of Control: The uses are controlled by Magento cloud entities. What information you upload on internet, where you access and many other things are controlled by Magento cloud server providers. If unfortunately their server don’t operate any more for some reason, I am afraid that all your information may lose.

·         Internet Reliance: While hosted service is available everywhere, you may not have permission to open the documents you have stored on the cloud if the area you are in doesn’t have Internet access.

·         Dependency on a reliable Internet connection: I am sure that you always need a reliable, high-speed Internet connection functioning the whole time you're working. Magento Cloud just allows this in developed countries such as US; however, it’s really an issue in developing countries or remote areas with no broadband.

Unlike Magento cloud, self-hosted Magento is outsourced information technology (IT) systems and functions. A hosting service provider owns and oversees infrastructure, software and administrative tasks and makes the system available to clients, usually over the Internet. Self-hosted Magento websites give you a lot more freedom of what you do with your Magento site such as adding new functions and designs, lower costs in long term, more free plugins, and future versions and security updates are actively managed by a community of developers. Self-hosting an open source platform means that you are the one in control of your website and you can find trusted professionals to work on your site instead of tying to Magento cloud server providers. It seems to overcome the disadvantages of cloud service.
